Review: Sunshine

Cast of Sunshine

I’ve been looking forward to the film “Sunshine” since I first heard about it. It had a great pedigree - Danny Boyle directed it, and I’ve loved some of Boyle’s previous films (“Shallow Grave”, “A Life Less Ordinary”, “Trainspotting”, “Millions”, “28 Days Later”). Its writer, Alex Garland, wrote “28 Days Later” and the slightly less successful (in my opinion) “The Beach”. And the cast was appealing - Cillian Murphy, Michelle Yeoh, Chris Evans, Rose Byrne (who seems to be in every other thing I’ve watched this summer).

There have been so many disappointing science fiction films over the years - “Event Horizon” being the one the generally comes to mind first (“Supernova” usually comes second) - and it’s so easy to become excited about a new film before it runs - that I was worried about expecting to much from “Sunshine”. And in fact, I’m also worried about overselling it here - it’s a really good film, and it’s a really good science fiction film in particular - but it doesn’t make up for the past sins of other films, nor should it have to.

The Book of Eli

Thursday, May 24th, 2007

Not much on this yet; “The Book of Eli” is a film about a road trip across post-apocalyptic America (you mean, different from the way it is now? Oh - it’s a wasteland, you say?) by a hero protecting a sacred book. The film will be directed by the Hughes Brothers, whose other credits include producing and directing “From Hell”, “Dead Presidents” and “American Pimp”, as well as producing the US version of “Touching Evil”.

I’m always a sucka for a good post-apocalyptic road-trip.

28 … Later

Wednesday, April 4th, 2007

“28 Weeks Later” isn’t even out yet, but MovieHole is teasing us with the news that if it performs well, we may be seeing “28 Months Later” (seriously, now who couldn’t have guessed that?). The really good news is that Danny Boyle (who directed the original “28 Days Later” wants to come back to direct the third film in the series.

Beware that the original MovieHole article has a spoiler for the end of “28 Weeks Later”.

Real “28 Weeks Later” Trailer Out

Wednesday, March 28th, 2007

28 Weeks Later
You can start breathing again - the real trailer for “28 Weeks Later” is now up on Apple’s Quicktime trailer site, in glorious hidef or old-fashioned resolutions for the grandparents. This is one is a lot better than “sneak peak” I posted about a couple of weeks ago.

The new trailer still has lots of people running and Robert Carlyle winking, but it also shows the quarantine of London, repopulating and then of course, everything going tits up (as they say in England). And no ads for other films!

28 Weeks Later poster

Okay, I promise not to let this turn into a big zombiefest in the coming weeks, but I’m excited about the release of 28 Weeks Later this spring and of course as we come closer to its release date, there’s more to post about it. “28 Days Later” was a refreshing take on the whole zombie apocalypse thing, making the zombies scary again at a time when the word “zombie” seemed a good description of the American public. Given a chance to revisit that territory, I’m hopeful and enthusiastic.

2012: The Book, the Movie

Monday, March 19th, 2007

First, you should know that Whitley Strieber has a book coming out in September 2007, a book so new, so … so secret! … that it doesn’t even have a cover up on Amazon yet. The book is 2012: The War for Souls.

The basic premise of the book is that a scientist finds that there are Earths in multiple dimensions and that in 2012, they’ll all be destroyed - Mayan prophecy style.

Southland Tales

Sarah Michelle Gellar in Southland Tales

Richard Kelly’s film “Donnie Darko” blew me away the first time I saw it. I still haven’t seen the director’s cut; it’s something I really want to see sometime soon. “Donnie Darko” had the misfortune to feature an aircraft accident and be released in the US soon after September 11th, 2001. Very few movie theaters would even touch it.

Since Donnie Darko, he also wrote “Domino” (directed by Tony Scott), an over-the-top insane bounty hunter film which was also poorly received but blew me away.

Kelly’s latest film is “Southland Tales”, billed as an “apocalyptic story set in Los Angeles”, starring “The Rock”, Sarah Michelle Gellar, who’s still trying to find her post-Buffy footing, and Seann William Scott (I’m sorry, but what the hell is up with that extra ‘n’, anyway)?
