Newton: Party Like It’s 2059

Isaac Newton

Not content to create calculus and revolutionize mathematics, construct a theory of gravity and motion, and invent the reflecting telescope and create a theory of optics explaining the color spectrum, Sir Isaac Newton also calculated when the Apocalypse might occur.

Newton was a Christian who railed against “magical thinking” and Christian mysticism… he believed that the universe operated in a mechanical rather than magical manner - this belief was the foundation for his work in the sciences and natural philosophy. That didn’t stop him from analyzing the texts of the Bible - in particular the Book of Daniel.

When the world ends - Jay and Seth vs. The Apocalypse

Ain’t It Cool News dug up a trailer for a supposed short film called “Jay and Seth vs. The Apocalypse”, with Jay Baruchel and Seth Rogen, both currently in “Knocked Up”. It looks like a post-end-of-the-world buddy film… I’m not sure that anything more than this trailer exists… since IMDB doesn’t know about it then that’s probably the case. In any event, the idea is probably funnier than the execution, so perhaps that’s for the best.

The YouTube video is below. It may be not safe for work, depending on where you work.

Flowchart for the End of the World

Armageddon Flowchart

I’ve been sitting on a slew of articles about bird flu and global warming for a while - they’re just so damned depressing. While it may be difficult to see the bright side in the end of the world, at least we might be able to approach it with some sense of humor. I’m not looking for this to be the “slash your wrists blog; it’s all hopeless after all”.

The Zombie Apocalypse

Wednesday, June 13th, 2007

Blog Like It's The End of the World Day

Here at “It’s the End of the World as We Know It”, every day is zombie apocalypse day.

The real question is - which will get us first? Will the zombies eat us before we we’re wiped out by bird flu? Will nuclear winter freeze the zombies before they can eat us? Or will future alien archaeologists trying to understand what happened here instead discover that the zombies ate the scientists before they were able to stop climate change?

Or will the zombies just be driving around in Prius’s sipping Venti Light Brain Frappucinos?
Me Zombie

When the Rapture comes, what happens to the zombies, anyway? Is there a zombie Rapture? Whose side are they on?

Will Galactus eat the zombies? Or will the zombies eat Galactus?

That’s the stuff we have to deal with every single day.

New Layout

Wednesday, May 9th, 2007

If you’ve been here before, you may notice a new layout for the blog. I’ve been tweaking it for a while; it’s consistent with the theme I’m using on my other blogs (Shiny Things, a gadget blog, and Blue Forest Blog, a software development blog).

There are a few features it has which I think are improvements over the old slightly-modified-Wordpress-default layout, including better use of tags and a couple of monetization features which I hope won’t be too obtrusive (the Amazon box on the right sidebar and the memory selector on the top).

York Minster's Great East Window

“The Great East Window” is a stained glass window in York Minster in the UK which depicts the apocalypse, including a literal mouth of hell with jaws and fangs. It also has the dragon and beast being worshipped, armageddon, and - what apocalyptic stained glass window would be complete without the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse?

Can’t We All Just Get Along?

Thursday, December 14th, 2006

When I first wrote about Left Behind: Eternal Forces, I honestly figured it was just blog fodder. I thought it would be one of those games I’d hear about once, which might never even make it to release… and even if it did, I’d never hear about it again.

Wrong!

Apocalypse’s Eternal Return

Sunday, December 10th, 2006

Reason Magazine runs a review of new-fangled psychedelic guru-wannabe Daniel Pinchbeck’s new book “2012: The Return of Quetzalcoatl” in which he discusses that modern excesses deserve an apocalypse in 2012, surveys various phenomena like crop circles, and channels Quetzalcoatl under the influence of the psychedelic drug ayahuasca, concluding that we’re due for a shift in consciousness on a planetary scale in 2012.

What, You Mean the President Shouldn’t Usher in the Apopcalypse?

Wednesday, December 6th, 2006

Collegiate Times ran a nice letter suggesting that perhaps having government leaders who believe the world is going to end in the next few decades isn’t the best idea.

Religious influence should be kept in perspective
