Part of a "Polar City"

Looking for good property values in the post-apocalyptic world? Florida beaches will probably be gone, so you’ll need to head further north - way north, according to Dan Bloom, whose concept is to build “Polar Cities”.

Look for the first to open in Norway in 2012 - yes, that should be a ding for all you 2012 enthusiasts, because that makes as much sense as any other 2012-doomsaying.

But… will they have Starbucks?

Thursday, May 17th, 2007

The director of “Failure to Launch”, which I once watched on a bus because my laptop’s battery was dead, has signed to direct a “family action-adventure film” called “2012″, for Nickelodeon. The film is about a family which goes on vacation during the Mayan apocalypse in December, 2012.

2012: The Book, the Movie

Monday, March 19th, 2007

First, you should know that Whitley Strieber has a book coming out in September 2007, a book so new, so … so secret! … that it doesn’t even have a cover up on Amazon yet. The book is 2012: The War for Souls.

The basic premise of the book is that a scientist finds that there are Earths in multiple dimensions and that in 2012, they’ll all be destroyed - Mayan prophecy style.

Apocalypse’s Eternal Return

Sunday, December 10th, 2006

Reason Magazine runs a review of new-fangled psychedelic guru-wannabe Daniel Pinchbeck’s new book “2012: The Return of Quetzalcoatl” in which he discusses that modern excesses deserve an apocalypse in 2012, surveys various phenomena like crop circles, and channels Quetzalcoatl under the influence of the psychedelic drug ayahuasca, concluding that we’re due for a shift in consciousness on a planetary scale in 2012.

Apocalypto (the Movie)

Apocalypto Poster

I haven’t mentioned Mel Gibson’s new film Apocalypto thus far because I haven’t really known what to say about it.

Gibson’s latest is another non-English-language film. Apocalypto takes place about 600 years ago during the decline of the Maya, as the Spanish were about to conquer them. The Maya, as we’ve mentioned here before, were famous for their ceremonial headdresses, their pyramids and especially their calendars.

By most reports, Apocalypto is a beautifully made, brutal film. A pair of recent reviews on Ain’t It Cool News disagree about its quality; one calls it out as one of the best recent films; the other review describes some of its motifs as cliched heavy-handed.

Beatles Apocalypse in 2012

Tuesday, November 28th, 2006

Normally copyright isn’t something that we have to deal with much here at the Apocalypse Blog (not is it something that certain savory third parties who blatantly violate the Apocalypse Blog’s copyright by reposting our articles on another blog worry much about, either), but recently copyright has been in the news in the UK.

Solar Flares to Bring About Mayan Apocalypse in 2012

Solar Flare Image from NOAA

I love it when one apocalypse coincides with a completely different apocalypse.

Solar flares are the violent ejection of material from the sun’s atmosphere. This explosion is extremely powerful, dwarfing any man-made explosion that has ever happened, and can affect things well past Earth’s orbit.
