Breaking News: World Ends Today!

It's easy to veer from a light-hearted look at the end of the world into bird flu, climate change, energy depletion and other serious issues that deserve some attention. ... Hawkins was the subject of one of my first Apocalypse Blog posts - Coming to You from the House of Yaweh in Abilene, Texas: Nucular War on September 12 - when he predicted with some certainty that the world would end in nuclear fire on September 12 - 2006. ... What we missed last time around was that he requires his followers to buy end-of-the-world-supplies through his company "Life Nutrition Products". ... I'll post again as soon as I notice it begin to rain nukes. [Via ABC News: Texas 'Prophet': Doomsday Begins June 12 ]

Why Is There Never a Post-Apocalyptic Robot Truck When You Need One?

I've been enjoying io9 , the relatively new science fiction blog from the Gawker blog empire. They have a nice mix of current science fiction news and SF nostalgia, and they have a particular eye for apocalyptic articles. They recently wrote about "Dark America", an unfinished novel by Junot Diaz, whose well-reviwed current book "The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao" is out in hardcover. While I'm unclear on what "Dark America" is actually about, the excerpt that io9 uses seems to have characters traveling in a robotic vehicle through post-apocalyptic America, always a plus in my opinion.
Global Warming and Cannibalism

A lot of things get blamed on "global warming"/"climate change", but this quote from Ted Turner is the first time I've heard cannibalism blamed on it. Can I have a side of tiki with that? [Via Quote of the Day: Ted Turner on Climate and Cannibalism : TreeHugger ] [tags]ted turner, global warming, cannibalism[/tags]

Whatever Shall I Wear to the End of the World?

Should it be functional or fashionable? Should it say "survivor" or "apocalypse fashion victim"? ... And what about sensible shoes? Whatever you wear to the end of the world, IO9 suggests it not be any of the fashions they're showing. [From Sci Fashion: Worst Possible Outfits for the Apocalypse ] [tags]clothes, apocalypse, fashion, io9[/tags]

Jericho Finale Tonight

Jericho, the little post-apocalyptic drama that could, winds up tonight, at least in theory. CBS has cancelled it a second time and this time I think that no amount of peanuts will get a reprieve.

The abbreviated second season of the show definitely improved its pace, and were it given a third season, I’d be happy [...]

Today is Doomsday

Neil Marshall (known for the horror films "Dog Soldiers" and "The Descent") has a new film out today, which I’ve written about a couple of times: the appropriately named “Doomsday”.

Teller: Zombie Apocalypse Survivor

Teller: actor, magician, painter, writer, stage partner of Penn Jillette. Officially single-named. Not actually mute.
And now - zombie apocalypse survivor.
Teller has released a brief video showing his life after the zombie apocalypse that destroys Las Vegas (presumably this time, what happens in Vegas doesn’t stay in Vegas).
And if you’ve never heard him speak before, Teller [...]

Satellite’s Gone… Part Two

That spy satellite’s been in the news a lot in the last few days.

The big news is that the US military is going to try to shoot it down - possibly tonight! By the time you’ve read this, it may be over.

Shooting it down does not mean obliterating it so that it’s just all gone. [...]
