The Zombie Apocalypse

Wednesday, June 13th, 2007

Blog Like It's The End of the World Day

Here at “It’s the End of the World as We Know It”, every day is zombie apocalypse day.

The real question is - which will get us first? Will the zombies eat us before we we’re wiped out by bird flu? Will nuclear winter freeze the zombies before they can eat us? Or will future alien archaeologists trying to understand what happened here instead discover that the zombies ate the scientists before they were able to stop climate change?

Or will the zombies just be driving around in Prius’s sipping Venti Light Brain Frappucinos?
Me Zombie

When the Rapture comes, what happens to the zombies, anyway? Is there a zombie Rapture? Whose side are they on?

Will Galactus eat the zombies? Or will the zombies eat Galactus?

That’s the stuff we have to deal with every single day.

28 Weeks Later

Love the film, hate the audience.

Recently zombie films have had a resurgence like never before… over the next few months we’re seeing several high profile zombie films released, from “28 Weeks Later” to “Fido” and “Diary of the Dead”. CBS will be airing a zombie-themed TV series next fall, “Babylon Fields”. There are zombie comics all over comics shop bookshelves. Boston is having a zombie walk the day after “28 Weeks Later” premieres. And the 800 pound zombie gorilla in the room, the film adaptation of “World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War” written by JMS and filmed by Brad Pitt’s production company, is still around the corner.

I don’t want to spoil the film for you. I’ll say that it begins with a betrayal, and that the consequences of that betrayal are devastating. The trailers make it clear that the film involves the repopulation of London, and you know that things are going to go south… you just don’t know when and you don’t know how far south.

Review: 28 Days Later: The Aftermath

Friday, May 4th, 2007

Comics are getting a little more love these days than they did during the past couple of decades as high profile comics adaptations are more or less successful (Spiderman, X-Men, Superman, with more on the way) and TV shows and movies continue in comics (Buffy Season 8, as one example).

With “28 Weeks Later” opening in a week, there’s a roughly 23 week gap left between it and “28 Days Later”. This gap is addressed in the comic book “28 Days Later: The Aftermath”, available as a trade paperback written by Steve Niles (also of “The Complete 30 Days of Night”).

28 Weeks Later movie poster

Ain’t It Cool News offers up the first review of “28 Weeks Later” that I’ve seen thus far. The review is generally positive - in fact, the reviewer liked”28 Weeks Later” better than “28 Days Later” - the reviewer didn’t like the turn the original movie took when the cast encounters Christopher Eccleston’s military compound… feelings I share.

Zombies on TV? They’re really hit the mainstream now. And - CBS? It’s hard to imagine CBS running a series with zombies eating people…

28 … Later

Wednesday, April 4th, 2007

“28 Weeks Later” isn’t even out yet, but MovieHole is teasing us with the news that if it performs well, we may be seeing “28 Months Later” (seriously, now who couldn’t have guessed that?). The really good news is that Danny Boyle (who directed the original “28 Days Later” wants to come back to direct the third film in the series.

Beware that the original MovieHole article has a spoiler for the end of “28 Weeks Later”.

Real “28 Weeks Later” Trailer Out

Wednesday, March 28th, 2007

28 Weeks Later
You can start breathing again - the real trailer for “28 Weeks Later” is now up on Apple’s Quicktime trailer site, in glorious hidef or old-fashioned resolutions for the grandparents. This is one is a lot better than “sneak peak” I posted about a couple of weeks ago.

The new trailer still has lots of people running and Robert Carlyle winking, but it also shows the quarantine of London, repopulating and then of course, everything going tits up (as they say in England). And no ads for other films!

28 Weeks Later poster

Okay, I promise not to let this turn into a big zombiefest in the coming weeks, but I’m excited about the release of 28 Weeks Later this spring and of course as we come closer to its release date, there’s more to post about it. “28 Days Later” was a refreshing take on the whole zombie apocalypse thing, making the zombies scary again at a time when the word “zombie” seemed a good description of the American public. Given a chance to revisit that territory, I’m hopeful and enthusiastic.
