Why Is There Never a Post-Apocalyptic Robot Truck When You Need One?

Thursday, April 17th, 2008

I’ve been enjoying io9, the relatively new science fiction blog from the Gawker blog empire. They have a nice mix of current science fiction news and SF nostalgia, and they have a particular eye for apocalyptic articles.

They recently wrote about “Dark America”, an unfinished novel by Junot Diaz, whose well-reviwed current book "The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao" is out in hardcover. While I’m unclear on what “Dark America” is actually about, the excerpt that io9 uses seems to have characters traveling in a robotic vehicle through post-apocalyptic America, always a plus in my opinion.

While we’re all still a-twitter about Ron Moore’s SciFi Channel reincarnation of Battlestar Galactica (whose characters who now lived through at least two apocalypses), there’s still a community of folks who are jonesing for the old show. For them, the comic book mini-series “Battlestar Galactica: Cylon Apocalypse” will be published in February 2007 (which is coming much sooner than it seems like it has any right to). The comic’s writer, Javier Grillo-Marxauch says he approached the project as if he were writing an episode of the old, Six-less series 30 years ago, avoiding covering the same territory that the current TV series is in.

In our focus on war, plague, prophecy and zombies causing the apocalypse, we have sadly neglected another important potential cause: robots. (more…)
