Marvel Ultimate Alliance Galactus

We caught the opening of the new Fantastic Four film last Friday. The story is apocalyptic in that it concerns the destruction of our world at the hands of an alien presence called Galactus - the “devourer of worlds”. The original story, reprinted in black and white in “Essential Fantastic Four Volume 3″ or in color on the “Fantastic Four and Silver Surfer” DVD-ROM, has the Fantastic Four fighting the herald of Galactus - the Silver Surfer - who eventually turns against his master, but it’s only with the help of the alien Watcher (a gigantic bald man wearing a toga) who breaks his vow of non-interference and helps them gain the “Ultimate Nullifier”, the only weapon in existence which can stop Galactus.

Heady stuff for the 60s, one of modern comics’ most classic stories, and close to the plot of the new Fantastic Four film.

The Devourer of Worlds Gets No Respect

Friday, June 8th, 2007

It’s tough being Galactus. Force for balance in the universe, hungry alien world-eater, Celestial egg hunter, always on call to boost the sales of a poor-selling comic, consistently betrayed by his heralds, and possibly appearing as a storm in the new Fantastic Four film.

Not to mention the fashion faux pas of purple and red armor.

Now Galactus is a — bad roommate!

Youtube video after the jump.

Fantastic Four #48 cover - The Coming of Galactus

I keep flipping back and forth on this film. By all rights it should suck. The first FF film sucked. And it also made zillions of dollars, guaranteeing continued suckage in the future. I’m sure this one will make zillions of dollars, too.

There are good things: the original story in comics, the rendering of the Silver Surfer, Laurence Fishburne voicing the Silver Surfer.

There are bad things: the first film, the continuing rumors that Galactus will be represented as a storm cloud.

little galactus

The thing about the first Spiderman film was that Spiderman looked like Spiderman. More amazingly, he moved like Spiderman. He web-slinged (web-slung?). While it didn’t follow the original Spiderman stories to the letter, it captured the heart and soul of them and still kept an impressive number of details faithful.

The first X-Men film managed to largely do this as well… I didn’t think it was quite as successful, but at the time it felt like the most faithful comics adaptation I’d yet seen, especially considering how it had to deal with the excessively complicated long-term story of the X-Men. Plus, it managed to make fun of superhero suits.

Galactus in Black

Ain’t It Cool News reports that Galactus - Devourer of Worlds - will be voiced by Laurence Fishburne in the upcoming Fantastic Four film. Fishburne seems like a great choice to voice the big G… his voice is deep, strong and distinctive. If he told me he hungered, I’d want to do something about it.
