Wastelands

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

“Wastelands: Stories of the Apocalypse” is an anthology of post-apocalyptic stories due out on January 8th. It includes stories by Stephen King, Gene Wolfe, Jonathan Lethem, Orson Scott Card, Octavia Butler, Cory Doctorow and others… and while it’s post-apocalyptic it apparently is grounded well enough to not include zombies or aliens.

Death from the Skies

Monday, April 9th, 2007

Phil Plait, author of “Bad Astronomy: Misconceptions and Misuses Revealed, from Astrology to the Moon Landing “Hoax”" is now working on his second book, “Death from the Skies”, due out in spring of 2008. “Death from the Skies” concerns all the ways that the universe can kill you - in an astronomical sense, rather than personal. Gamma ray bursts, asteroids, comets; I’m pulling for the earth being ripped apart by a black hole, myself. Or being invaded by aliens who die when they come in contact with water.

People in Wichita Don’t Like “The Road”

Friday, December 8th, 2006

Apparently people, or at least newspaper reviewers, in Kansas aren’t fond of Cormac McCarthy’s recent apocalyptic novel “The Road”. While acknowledging McCarthy’s past success as a writer, they take issue with the world ravaged by nuclear war and yet allowing people to survive, and McCarthy’s swollen purple prose.

Evangelicals and Climate Change

Wednesday, October 25th, 2006

I know Bill Moyers mostly from “Joseph Campbell and the Power of Myth”. Moyers brought out the best in Campbell. In Campbell’s other videos, he was the geek professor to a tee; with Moyers he became the inspired prophet for gen-x and the 90’s.
