Phil Plait (Dr. Bad Astronomy) has an exciting new book out – "Death from the Skies!: These Are the Ways the World Will End . . ." – which is the very essence of the apocalypse. Plait explores ways the world really might end – black holes, gamma ray bursts, solar flares, the death of the sun… none of which are highly likely (at least any time soon), but are more likely than a bunch of seals getting opened and beasts with lots of eyes walking the earth.

The book was just released, so I haven’t had a chance to read it yet, but his previous book ("Bad Astronomy: Misconceptions and Misuses Revealed, from Astrology to the Moon Landing “Hoax”") was a well written, considerate look at… bad astronomy. So I have high hopes for “Death from Above”, and it’s well-reviewed on Amazon.
