Today is Doomsday

Neil Marshall (known for the horror films "Dog Soldiers" and "The Descent") has a new film out today, which I’ve written about a couple of times: the appropriately named “Doomsday”.

In 2037, thirty years after Scotland was sealed off to contain a plague, Bob Hoskins sends Rhona Mitra back into Scotland in order to try to find the cure, as the disease has recurred outside. In the process she encounters Malcolm McDowell, doing a turn as Colonel Kurtz (but not o be too obvious, his character is named “Kane” instead of “Kurtz”).

I was excited about the film when I first heard about it. The closer it’s come to opening, the colder I’ve gotten. The trailer really turned me off; it looks too "Mad Max" crossed with "Beyond Thunderdome" to me. Wait, those were in the same series of films…

For some reason, sticking mohawks and tattoos on some Scots have having them go tribal doesn’t really scare me. Mostly it looks silly. If you want to pick something from Scotland that scares me, it’s the haggis.

Still I’ll probably see it, if not now, when it hits DVD. I do have a soft spot for Malcolm McDowell playing crazy.

You can check out the trailer at Apple.

Have you seen it? Did you enjoy it?
