Life After People

The History Channel's "Life After People"

I usually expect that The History Channel will run shows about… you know… history… things that have come before. But honestly, I couldn’t tell you the last time I watched something on it, so for all I know it’s running shows about stuff that hasn’t happened yet all the time.

In this case, it’s running a 2 hour special called “Life After People”, which is about what happens to the world if all the people are gone. Which, last I checked, hadn’t happened yet, so that’s why I’m making comments about things that haven’t happened yet.

According to the History Channel’s web site, the show explores how the world would change after all the people disappeared. What would happen to human infrastructure - cars, buildings?

When I first heard about the show I thought it must be based on Alan Weisman’s book “The World Without Us”, and indeed it sounds very similar but apparently is not based on the book.

The History Channel also poses the question “Could you survive?” on the site for “Life After People”, which… if there aren’t any people left then you’d be gone too. And it wouldn’t really matter if you could signal rescuers since they’d also be gone. I think they grafted that section in from something else…

“Life After People” premieres on the History Channel (the normal one and the one in glorious HD, if you’ve got that) on Monday January 21st at 9PM. If you miss it, they’re hawking the DVD on their web site too and I’m sure they’ll rerun it often.
