Update on the Film Version of “The Road”
Dark Horizons reports that Guy Pearce (of “The Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert”, “L.A. Confidential”, “Memento”, “The Time Machine”, and one of my all-time favorite horror films, “Ravenous”) has joined the cast of the film adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s “The Road”.
I finally read “The Road”… you’d think with all the fuss about it I wouldn’t have waited so long and I wouldn’t have been surprised that it was so good… it was actually a page-turner, and a very compelling story. It helped that I read it on the road. I’ll get my review of it up here sometime soonish. But having read it, I now know that it really doesn’t have an awful lot of characters. In fact, there are only two characters who have any significant amount of page-time in the book: the father and the son. It seems safe to say that unless the screenplay is deviating substantially from the book, or Guy Pearce is doing an effective cameo, he’ll be playing the father.
“The Road”, if you don’t know already, is a book about the travels across a devastated America, by a father and his son. It’s received many awards and quite a bit of attention from Oprah. You can check it out at Amazon.
The film is being directed by John Hillcoat, whose recent film credit is “The Proposition”, a western set in the Australian Outback, also starring Guy Pearce.
