When the world ends - Jay and Seth vs. The Apocalypse

Ain’t It Cool News dug up a trailer for a supposed short film called “Jay and Seth vs. The Apocalypse”, with Jay Baruchel and Seth Rogen, both currently in “Knocked Up”. It looks like a post-end-of-the-world buddy film… I’m not sure that anything more than this trailer exists… since IMDB doesn’t know about it then that’s probably the case. In any event, the idea is probably funnier than the execution, so perhaps that’s for the best.

The YouTube video is below. It may be not safe for work, depending on where you work.

Jericho Reruns

Thursday, June 14th, 2007

CBS is airing reruns of the pilot and second half of the first season of Jericho starting on July 6th. I suspect that before deciding on its limited renewal they weren’t going to rerun it at all. Keeping with the second half of the first season seems a wise idea… that’s when the story picked up and became more interesting.

Ain’t It Cool News’ article on the subject (link below) talks about the implausibility and general boringness of the first half of the season - which, combined with the winter break, is probably what sank the show - and how the show improved when it stopped being about life in a small post-nuclear-war town.

Flowchart for the End of the World

Armageddon Flowchart

I’ve been sitting on a slew of articles about bird flu and global warming for a while - they’re just so damned depressing. While it may be difficult to see the bright side in the end of the world, at least we might be able to approach it with some sense of humor. I’m not looking for this to be the “slash your wrists blog; it’s all hopeless after all”.

The Zombie Apocalypse

Wednesday, June 13th, 2007

Blog Like It's The End of the World Day

Here at “It’s the End of the World as We Know It”, every day is zombie apocalypse day.

The real question is - which will get us first? Will the zombies eat us before we we’re wiped out by bird flu? Will nuclear winter freeze the zombies before they can eat us? Or will future alien archaeologists trying to understand what happened here instead discover that the zombies ate the scientists before they were able to stop climate change?

Or will the zombies just be driving around in Prius’s sipping Venti Light Brain Frappucinos?
Me Zombie

When the Rapture comes, what happens to the zombies, anyway? Is there a zombie Rapture? Whose side are they on?

Will Galactus eat the zombies? Or will the zombies eat Galactus?

That’s the stuff we have to deal with every single day.

We’ll Always Have Nuclear Winter

Monday, June 11th, 2007

With global warming all the rage, we don’t hear much about that other bugaboo of the 70’s - nuclear winter. The engine of global warming is the dumping of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere - these gases absorb more heat from the sun and raise the general temperature of the planet. Nuclear winter works the other way - exploding nuclear devices throw carbon soot into the atmosphere which shields us from the sun’s warmth and lowers temperatures around the globe.

With Russia’s Vladimir Putin accusing the US of trying to restart the cold war and the US’ proposed missile defense shield for Europe all over the news recently, perhaps we’re not as far away from nuclear winter as we might have thought.

In the 60’s and 70’s the only countries capable of a nuclear exchange that could bring on nuclear winter were the US and the USSR… recent rhetoric aside, fortunately that scenario has seemed unlikely for many years now, but it’s no longer the only possibility.

The Devourer of Worlds Gets No Respect

Friday, June 8th, 2007

It’s tough being Galactus. Force for balance in the universe, hungry alien world-eater, Celestial egg hunter, always on call to boost the sales of a poor-selling comic, consistently betrayed by his heralds, and possibly appearing as a storm in the new Fantastic Four film.

Not to mention the fashion faux pas of purple and red armor.

Now Galactus is a — bad roommate!

Youtube video after the jump.

Obligatory Jericho Update III - Jericho Returns

Jericho Poster

I didn’t mean for this to be “Jericho Week” but apparently it is.

First - wonder what CBS is going to do with twenty tons of nuts? They’re donating them to charity, including a charity that will likely send some of them overseas to US troops.

With the most pressing issue dealt with, CBS has announced that they’ve struck a deal with the makers of Jericho to bring it back mid-season for at least 7 episodes.

Honey bee on honeycomb

Salon has one-upped most writers about Colony Collapse Disorder in the bee world by actually gathering a group of bee experts and talking with them about what’s going on, rather than just pointlessly speculating and calling for tin-foil hats (which makes me think, so far I haven’t run across any “Mars needs bees” theories pointing the finger at alien-apiary abduction).

Obligatory Jericho Update II: CBS Blinks?

United States of Jericho

Possible congratulations, Jericho fans… rumor has it that CBS is caving to the pressure applied by almost 20 tons of nuts being sent to CBS in protest of the show’s cancellation.

Obligatory Jericho Update

Monday, June 4th, 2007

Nuts Online has now received orders for almost 19 tons of nuts to be sent to CBS. They’re now donating part of the proceeds to Greensburg, Kansas, the town that was destroyed by a tornado recently. While I’m sure that this “save Jericho by sending nuts to CBS” campaign has been a windfall to Nuts Online, it’s great to see them helping out others as well.

I haven’t seen any hint of a response from CBS yet. There may never be one.
