Global Warming Bad Luck Streak

Thursday, May 31st, 2007

There’s lots of bad news on the climate change front. Links at the end.

  • New Scientist reports that worldwide carbon dioxide emissions are growing even faster than predicted. This is bad news because carbon dioxide is implicated as the primary greenhouse gas implicated in climate change. Our industrialized society produces a certain amount of carbon dioxide and the planet is capable of absorbing back a certain amount.

Signs of the Apocalypse: Things With Too Many Things

Spider Frog!

Red calves, beasts with many eyes, in general critters with too many whatsits or unusual coloring are often interpreted as signs of the apocalypse, whether due to prophecy or just because they give people the willies. If mutants really were signs of the apocalypse then the world would have ended during the first Lollapalooza festival… but we still carry on.

Jericho Memorial Day Update: Seven Eight Twelve Tons of Nuts

Squirrel Nuts

Every time I check how many nuts Nuts Online has shipped to CBS for Jericho fans I find I’m a ton or two out of date. The total as of morning on Memorial Day is a little over twelve tons ordered, and they’re about 3 tons behind on shipping right now. They’re in on the holiday working to ship more peanuts out. These guys have really found a niche…

The Book of Eli

Thursday, May 24th, 2007

Not much on this yet; “The Book of Eli” is a film about a road trip across post-apocalyptic America (you mean, different from the way it is now? Oh - it’s a wasteland, you say?) by a hero protecting a sacred book. The film will be directed by the Hughes Brothers, whose other credits include producing and directing “From Hell”, “Dead Presidents” and “American Pimp”, as well as producing the US version of “Touching Evil”.

I’m always a sucka for a good post-apocalyptic road-trip.

More Bee Apocalypse

The Simpsons Bee Man

Even if it is a fungus that’s killing off the bees, we won’t be seeing an immediate turn-around in the declining bee population. And the bees remain in the news. Links are at the bottom.

More people are speculating about the loss of the bees, including Mark Morford in an article that’s appealingly titled “Apocalypse Of The Honeybees”… how could I resist such a thing?

Honeybees have died back before, and the unusual thing about this time may simply be that we’re better connected to one another now so we can tell when it’s happening globally.

Mr. Peanut Goes to War

Nothing says “I want my favorite TV show un-cancelled” like sending a TV network two and a half tons of nuts, which is exactly what fans of Jericho are doing via Nuts Online. Check them out; if you refresh the page you’ll get updated stats on the amount of nuts ordered by fans.

Perhaps the Fat Lady Has Not Yet Sung for Jericho

Jericho logo

Ain’t It Cool News has reported on an online effort by Jericho fans to persuade CBS not to cancel the show, including sending nuts to CBS (a reference to a story and a line of dialog in the final episode of the show). Apparently CBS has taken some notice and said “We’ll try to figure out a way to wrap it up” - which is not the same as saying “Gee, maybe you all will start watching it more so I guess we’ll bring it back”.

The Mayan Apocalypse - You Know, for Kids

Thursday, May 17th, 2007

The director of “Failure to Launch”, which I once watched on a bus because my laptop’s battery was dead, has signed to direct a “family action-adventure film” called “2012″, for Nickelodeon. The film is about a family which goes on vacation during the Mayan apocalypse in December, 2012.
