Danger! Danger!
The International Atomic Energy Commission and the International Organization for Standardization have released a new, user friendly ionizing radiation symbol. This new symbol is a small comic book showing what happens when you are exposed to the old standard trefoil radiation symbol: pirates chase you.
The new symbol took five years to design and was worked on and tested in eleven countries. It’s designed to supplement, not replace the old yellow trefoil, which is considered to not be particularly inherently meaningful and not say anything at all about pirates. The new symbol is intended to be on the housing of the source of the radiation, not the outside of a container, so that when you disassemble something that’s radioactive you’ll see the new symbol, which says “Now you’ve done it. Pirates.”
