Last One for the Road
Okay, one final apocalyptic post. CNN reports that “Flu virus ‘could kill 81 million’”.
Apparently if you take the number of people who might have died from the flu pandemic in 1918, scale it by the increase in population in various countries, totally ignore advances in medical technology, scientific understanding of how viruses operate and spread, and modern ability to contain outbreaks, and throw in a dash of PR hysteria, you get 81 million possible deaths.
“The study estimates that 96 percent of the deaths would occur in the developing world.”
Well duh. Is it in any way surprising that wealthy, well-fed Americans (even the ones living in trailer parks) are less likely to die from the flu than impoverished, malnourished Asian or African paupers with no medical care?
Doe the flu know it’s Christmas-time at all???
