People in Wichita Don’t Like “The Road”
Apparently people, or at least newspaper reviewers, in Kansas aren’t fond of Cormac McCarthy’s recent apocalyptic novel “The Road”. While acknowledging McCarthy’s past success as a writer, they take issue with the world ravaged by nuclear war and yet allowing people to survive, and McCarthy’s swollen purple prose.
I have a copy of the book and haven’t yet gotten to read it; the fact that I now know it contains the word “pampooties” means I have to move it to the top of my stack.
While the reviewer seems to have some valid criticisms of the prose (which may be lessened by taking it in context; we’ll have to see), it’s always a bit dangerous to take reviews written by “a professional writer” who is less successful than his subject.
