Beatles Apocalypse in 2012
Normally copyright isn’t something that we have to deal with much here at the Apocalypse Blog (not is it something that certain savory third parties who blatantly violate the Apocalypse Blog’s copyright by reposting our articles on another blog worry much about, either), but recently copyright has been in the news in the UK.
The UK’s copyright laws allow artists to retain copyright protection for their works for 50 years after publication. The British Phonographic Institute has been lobbying to extend that protection to 95 years, but a recent review of the laws conducted by the British government recommended leaving the rules as they are now.
That means that copyright on the Beatles’ earliest works will start running out in 2012 - yes - yes - you’ve got it! “Love Me Do” will become public domain at the same time as the Mayan apocalypse!
Whether this precipitates the Mayan apocalypse or is merely the freely copied soundtrack to it remains to be seen.
Beatles music to start entering UK public domain in 2012?
