Gaia

Remember James Lovelock? He’s the Gaia-hypothesis guy. The Gaia hypothesis is the idea that all the living things on earth are really one organism. The Gaia hypothesis isn’t widely accepted in the scientific community, although various forms of the idea that kinds of life (oceanic, forest, animal) balance out one another are better accepted, and even in the Gaia-hypothesis-community there is a spectrum of belief including strong and weak versions of the Gaia hypothesis.

Apocalypto Poster

I haven’t mentioned Mel Gibson’s new film Apocalypto thus far because I haven’t really known what to say about it.

Gibson’s latest is another non-English-language film. Apocalypto takes place about 600 years ago during the decline of the Maya, as the Spanish were about to conquer them. The Maya, as we’ve mentioned here before, were famous for their ceremonial headdresses, their pyramids and especially their calendars.

By most reports, Apocalypto is a beautifully made, brutal film. A pair of recent reviews on Ain’t It Cool News disagree about its quality; one calls it out as one of the best recent films; the other review describes some of its motifs as cliched heavy-handed.

Beatles Apocalypse in 2012

Tuesday, November 28th, 2006

Normally copyright isn’t something that we have to deal with much here at the Apocalypse Blog (not is it something that certain savory third parties who blatantly violate the Apocalypse Blog’s copyright by reposting our articles on another blog worry much about, either), but recently copyright has been in the news in the UK.

Ever Since the World Ended poster

This looks like a cute film (in-as-much as post-apocalyptic films can be said to be cute). Set in San Francisco twelve years after a pandemic has killed almost everyone, the film is presented as a documentary as the filmmakers wander San Francisco and beyond.

Drawn Together Clara Praying to Jesus

Drawn Together can be both more vile and more funny than South Park. When I first saw ads for the show I thought “exploitation” but when I finally started watching it, I was amazed at how smart and stupid it managed to be at the same time, how vile and how very, very funny. It’s one of the shows I most look forward to every week…the story of cartoon housemates on a reality show akin to Big Brother.
