Second Life Apocalypse
More Boing-Boing: Virtual world Second-Life has suffered a nanotech-like “grey goo” attack. In hypothetical nanotech terms, grey goo is the result of an attack where nanotech replicators consume all available matter in order to assemble duplicates of themselves which continue to run rampant. Such an attack on Earth could consume the entire planet in two days. The attack on Second-Life is purely virtual, but still caused a great deal of damage.
It looks like they were eventually able to contain and eliminate the attack.
I’m not even sure how to categorize this one… plague? Pestilence? Natural disaster?
