Apocalyptic Corn Dogs

Yes, I’m just a sucker for anything with the word “apocalypse” in it - in this case, “A sign of the apocalypse: Corn dogs go upscale”.

Now, corn dogs may be nutritionally apocalyptic, but that’s probably as far as their link to doomsday goes. Still, they’re a fun topic and make for a nice change of pace.

Who knew that you could get lemongrass rock shrimp corn dogs? I’d never heard of such a thing, but apparently lobster corn dogs are quite popular too, as well as buffalo corn dogs. The recipe for them is included in the article linked at the end of this entry.

And, from last year’s Top Chef, chorizo and duck sausage corn dogs sound very yummy.

The corn dog was originally invented in 1942 by Neil Fletcher, whose son Skip still sells them. Wikipedia points out that there is some dissent about who sold the first corn dog, and that the stick came later. Also, they’re big in Japan.

Whatever their lineage and ingredients, it’s likely that if humans are still eating anything after the apocalypse, they’ll be eating food on a stick.

(Does that photo actually look appealing to you? It doesn’t make me want to run out and eat those things)
