Jericho - Who Knew the Apocalypse Would Be So Boring?

Jericho

I’ve been meaning to write more about Jericho, and now I have the impetus to do so: one of Jericho’s creators, Jon Turtelaub, says in a SCI FI Wire interview, that the goal of Jericho is to explore how different characters react in a crisis.

Jericho’s been doing pretty well. It’s gotten a full season pickup. CNN describes it as a breakout hit. I’m watching it every week, and yet I’m hesitant to say that I’m enjoying it.

We’re Doomed! Doomed, I Say!

Monday, October 30th, 2006

Philly.com has an article up about crackpot Rick Santorum’s ranting about the impending doom America will face if a Democrat is elected in his place. Santorum is a second term senator from Pennsylvania, up for re-election in November 2006.

Santorum describes his stance as “Compassionate Conservatism”, which justifies:

  • his condemnation of homosexuality as bestiality
  • his belief that Boston’s liberalism was the cause behind the recent Catholic Church sexual abuse scandal
  • his statement that people who did not leave New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina deserved to be punished by law

Second Life Apocalypse

Picture 2

More Boing-Boing: Virtual world Second-Life has suffered a nanotech-like “grey goo” attack. In hypothetical nanotech terms, grey goo is the result of an attack where nanotech replicators consume all available matter in order to assemble duplicates of themselves which continue to run rampant. Such an attack on Earth could consume the entire planet in two days. The attack on Second-Life is purely virtual, but still caused a great deal of damage.

Apocalyptic Corn Dogs

Styfoodcorndogs2

Yes, I’m just a sucker for anything with the word “apocalypse” in it - in this case, “A sign of the apocalypse: Corn dogs go upscale”.

Now, corn dogs may be nutritionally apocalyptic, but that’s probably as far as their link to doomsday goes. Still, they’re a fun topic and make for a nice change of pace.

Who knew that you could get lemongrass rock shrimp corn dogs? I’d never heard of such a thing, but apparently lobster corn dogs are quite popular too, as well as buffalo corn dogs. The recipe for them is included in the article linked at the end of this entry.

Doomsday Recovery Timeline

Wednesday, October 25th, 2006

Doom 1

Treehugger ran an article a while back that showed a timeline of how the earth would recover following the immediate exit of the human race. The atmosphere recovers rather quickly, within 10 years, with it taking 100 years for cities to be overgrown and up to 50,000 years before most traces of us are gone.

Evangelicals and Climate Change

I know Bill Moyers mostly from “Joseph Campbell and the Power of Myth”. Moyers brought out the best in Campbell. In Campbell’s other videos, he was the geek professor to a tee; with Moyers he became the inspired prophet for gen-x and the 90’s.
