Jericho

Thursday, August 31st, 2006

JerichoThe world will end at 8PM on September 20th on CBS, with the start of their new show Jericho. Set in a small town in Kansas, the series opens with mushroom clouds on the horizon and apparently the show’s drama derives from the town not knowing what happened or if they’re the only ones left alive. Me, I’d probably head out and try to figure out what’s up, but maybe no one in Jericho is up to that. Talk on the Internet teases that there may be more going on than meets the eye, a la Lost… but then every network wants to have a Lost on its hands.

Jerichostars Skeet Ulrich, whose last TV outing was (I believe) Miracles, also an apocalyptic show revolving around a message the main character sees in his own blood, which may be read as God is now here or God is nowhere. Jehrico also stars Gerald McRaney, Deadwood’s own villain Hearst, as the town’s mayor.

28 Weeks Later

Thursday, August 31st, 2006

28daysWork on 28 Weeks Later is proceeding apace, with Harold Perrineau (Michael from Lost) joining the cast. The film is directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, who directed 1996’s Esposados, 2001’s Intacto and 2002’s Psicotaxi.

28 Weeks Later is, of course, the sequel to 28 Days Later, 2003’s film about a zombie apocalypse in Great Britain by Trainspotting’s director Danny Boyle. Unfortunately, the only thing 28 Weeks Later has in common with its predecessor is production company and setting: 28 weeks after the initial infestation, people are returning to London thinking that the zombie attacks are over with, which of course they must not be, and, presumably, hilarity ensues.

The Doomsday Clock

Doomsday Clock: Timeline | thebulletin.org

The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists has published a “Doomsday Clock” since 1947… the clock is meant to be a representation of how close we are to nuclear war. The clock has stood at seven minutes to midnight since 2002. It looks like the best we’ve done is seventeen minutes to midnight in 1991, after the START treaty; the worst is two minutes in 1953 when the US and the Soviet Union both were testing nuclear weapons.
